| Inscription | Commemorative plaque (1): THE CATHEDRAL // Most significant example of early brickwork architecture in Northern Germany. Henry the Lion laid the foundation stone in 1173. To the Romanesque cathedral sacred in 1247 a vestible (the so-called "Paradise") was attached to the Northern nave in 1254/1259. A Gothic gallery choir was added to the building between 1266 and 1341 so that the church became a Gothic hall-church with lateral chapels that were attached to the main aisle until the 15th century. 1942 partly destroyed by fire. Reconstruction works started in 1947. Commemorative plaque (2): DER DOM // Bedeutendes Zeugnis des frühen Backsteinbaus in Norddeutschland. 1173 Grundsteinlegung durch Heinrich den Löwen. der 1247 geweihte romanische Dom, der um 1254/1259 die Vorhalle ("Paradies") am Nordquerschiff erhalten hatte, erweitert durch gotischen Umgangschor zwischen 1266 und 1341, danach umgebaut zu Hallenkirche, versehen mit Kapellenanbauten bis ins 15. Jahrhundert. 1942 teilweise ausgebrannt. Wiederaufbau 1947 eingeleitet. |
